Oby retired from the RAAF in 1982 and worked at New Hope Coal Australia for over 20 years as Cataloguing Officer, Admin Officer and Services Coordinator until his permanent retirement in 2006. Oby completed 21 missions to Vietnam in C130A's between September 1966 and August 1971. He received the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air (CVSA) in January 1972 for flood relief operations in the Moree / Dubbo areas February to March 1971.
