Noel completed 49 missions to Vietnam between 1967 and 1972 and also in 1975. He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Australia Day, 1986 for service to the Royal Australian Air Force as Loadmaster Leader, 37 Squadron.

Noel retired from the RAAF in August 1994 and took-on a position at the University of Western Sydney (Blacktown Campus) as an examination supervisor until his permanent retirement in June 2009.
